I was completely caught off guard!!

My husband and I were walking through a store and passed by a table of discounted hard cover books. Being obsessed with books my head automatically turned to glance at the titles as we walked by. My husband giggled and said don't even think about it, you have enough. Then he completely surprised me by saying that I should really check into the Kindle. RT, a guy from his office, was telling him all about his. My husband then said that his boss also had one. They were apparently telling him all about it and piqued his interest.

Now those of you who know me a little know how much my husband detests what I read and the amount of reading that I do. So when he told me to check into the kindle I almost peed my pants. I told him that the kindle runs around $300, but there are some a little cheaper. So this morning I started looking into the kindle and kindle 2 (will be released Feb. 24). I really like these two, but I am wondering about the others that I saw. Does the Sony ereader download books anywhere or do they need to be hooked up to the computer? I know there are other questions that I should be asking but this one seems to be a big deal! I am almost 100% positive that I can talk my husband into purchasing the Kindle for me if only so that he can use it when he is in Alaska this summer.

So all of you ebook readers PLEASE let me know what you think about your reader and how it would compare to the Kindle.

You have to be hooked up to download to the reader, not so with Kindle. I think if you hubby is happy for the kindle, GET it!!! The updated one has features that the earlier one didn't have, that steered me away! Yippee!

I love my Sony Reader, but yes - it does NOT have a wireless card. So you need to hook it up to your regular computer/laptop to transfer your downloaded ebooks on to the reading device.

Personally, I think it boils down to how badly you want that wireless feature. I'm not wild about the Kindle for various reasons (the big one being I don't want to be that dependent on Amazon) - but I will admit it, I do covet the wireless capability.

I have a Sony Ereader for over a year and I LOVE it.. I don't leave home without it either!!

You do have to be connected to the computer to download the books, but I don't mind that.. books are easily be converted to the Sony format, and the new one has touch screen and light.. I might consider getting the new one in the future..

As for the Kindle, I too don't want to be dependant on Amazon.. plus I think if the device has wireless I might waste my time browsing instead of reading :)

I didn't realize that you had to buy the books from only Amazon with the kindle. When reading about the Sony, it said something about the Sony store, so does Sony allow you download books from anywhere? What other things did you not like with the kindle. I don't know that the wireless card is a must have for me. I always have access to a computer even when out of town(because of hubby).

I'm not expert, so keep that in mind LOL - but Sony recently updated their software so the reader will now read other DRM Adobe files. So now I can buy books from the Sony Store (insanely easy!) or from anywhere else that offers the Adobe format.

I mostly buy from Sony and from eHarlequin. With eHar, I had to download the Adobe Digital Editions software and register my reader so it would be "recognized." Once I did that, it was really easy.

My advice would be to check out a Reader in person. They sell them at Sony Stores, Borders and Target. Also, it might be worth tracking down a Kindle owner to get the inside scoop on it. I've never played with one, so can't offer any advice there......

I have the sony reader and I love it. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that it doesn't have a backlight.

Actually I don't buy from the Sony store because I don't live in the USA and therefore have no access to it.. So I get ebooks from around the Internet and convert them to the lrf format and DL to my Sony.. Simple and easy!

Barbara, the backlight is resolved now if you want to buy the new one.. if not and you have the 550 like me you could buy the cover that has an included light.. I got it and it's great! very relaxing to the eyes, and once I put it on my reader I didn't take it off, it's been a couple of months now!
you could find it in the Sony online or even Ebay (I got it from Ebay).. it's really worth the money :)

I am completely and utterly jealous. I am drooling over the kindle2.

So I did some checking up on the kindle... it doesn't seem like I would be tied to Amazon exclusively for ebooks. It comes with the USB cord so that I can attach it to the pc and download from there. I would only be tied to Amazon for the wireless downloads. That was my main concern. However Hubby said that I had to get a job or wait at least 6 mos to get one due to the Barcelona trip and Spring Break vacation with the kids that are both right around the corner. A little diappointed? YES! But I guess I can sacrifice my wants of an ebook reader for the Spain and another vacation with the kids!
